HomeAid, Builder Captain K. Hovnanian Homes – Virginia, and 28 trade partners completed a renovation of the Catholic Charities, Diocese of Arlington’s Christ House in Old Town Alexandria in May 2019. The $83,000 renovation was completed in just 6 weeks, due to what K. Hovnanian Project Manager Matthew Glakas called a “huge team effort,” resulting from the dedication and participation of each trade partner involved. Christ House, built in 1810, provides a number of critical services to the community, including transitional housing for 14 men, a food pantry, emergency rental assistance services, and a soup kitchen that has proudly served dinner every night since 1974.
Christ House serves hundreds of community members each day through its varied services, so HomeAid, K. Hovnanian, and all 28 trade partners made sure to work around the clients’ needs and ensure that Christ House could continue serving the community and maintain its “serving meals continuously since 1974” record. The building team completed several refreshing upgrades to the space, including the replacement of cabinets, countertops, and shelving, as well as the installation of new appliances, flooring, plumbing and electrical components in the kitchen areas. Additionally, the renovation included new interior paint, thermostats, ventilation, electrical, lighting, and bathroom facility upgrades throughout the historic building. Meeting rooms, apartments, staff offices, and the chapel were rejuvenated by new paint, lighting, window treatments and flooring. All of the materials utilized were selected for their high quality to ensure that the renovation upgrades will endure and benefit the community long into the future, just as Christ House has.
