HomeAid National Capital Region is a successful and dynamic non-profit that builds and renovates housing and shelter facilities for the organizations that own/operate them. We support shelters and the community at-large by leveraging the relationships and resources of the homebuilding industry to change the lives of those who are homeless.
Started in 2001 by members of the Northern Virginia Building Industry Association (NVBIA), HomeAid National Capital Region believes that the best way to solve homelessness is to ensure everyone has a safe and stable place to live. HomeAid’s partners give their time, resources, and expertise to improve the lives of thousands of people struggling with homelessness by focusing on what matters most—a home.
HomeAid completes projects in Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun, Prince William, Winchester and Fauquier Counties, as well as communities in the cities of Falls Church, Manassas, Alexandria, and Fairfax and Washington, D.C.
We work exclusively with organizations (rather than directly with homeless families and individuals) because this helps to ensure that the people we serve will receive the kind of attention and programming that they need in order to reach self-sufficiency. The organizations receive significant cost savings on the work—savings that allows their limited resources to go back into the job skills training and other educational resources that truly help people to get back on their feet.
It is a model built on partnerships—partnerships between two or more non-profits and many public and private companies, which allows each party to focus on giving back in the way that is most efficient based on their skillsets; builders focus on building, shelter partners on providing services to their clients, and HomeAid on bridging gaps in fundraising and transforming the needs of the shelter community into action (providing necessary project management). The professional nature of the building projects completed ensures the longevity of the project and creates assets for the shelter community. HomeAid is the only organization providing building and
renovation services to shelter organizations throughout the National Capital Region.
Homeless families moving into properties we’ve built or renovated have a safe, stable place to live and enriched programming—both of which help to restore confidence, lift a significant burden, and empower them to become self-sufficient. Funds saved on each project go into educational programs and other training to help clients get back on their feet. Facilities that due to budgetary restrictions and ignorance of the building process might otherwise go unmaintained are remodeled to become a source of pride for the community.
For people without one, a home changes everything. A home offers so much more than a place to sleep—it is a place to feel safe, to grow together as a family, to work towards a brighter future. Research shows that having a safe, happy environment in which to live improves one’s health and greatly increases a child’s chances of growing up without developmental and physical delays. A safe and stable home improves a child’s foundation for a bright, happy, and healthy future. The buildings we build or upgrade become that strong foundation, helping to improve not only the daily living conditions of the people living in them, but also help to improve their futures and the future of our community by extension. Additionally, our projects are built to last; they reduce the cost to shelter organizations of “turning over” their properties for new families for many years to come. Our project homes also boost the self-confidence of the people living in them, encouraging them to work for a better future and the opportunity to provide a similar place for their own families.
