Press Release: Builders for Babies 2024

HomeAid National Capital Region Kicks Off Diaper Drive for Nonprofits Serving Families in Need

Here is How You Can Help

Fairfax County, VA. – April 22, 2024 – This Mother’s Day, May 12th, HomeAid National Capital Region will kick off its annual Builders for Babies Diaper Drive, a community-wide effort to collect diapers and wipes for nonprofits serving those experiencing or at risk of experiencing homelessness. Now, through Father’s Day, June 16th, individuals, organizations, and groups are encouraged to organize and host a diaper drive to help keep babies safe and dry.

The cost of disposable diapers is over $1,000 a year per child, a considerable expense for families struggling to make ends meet. Donations of diapers and wipes are critical because most daycares require that parents provide diapers, so for a family without access, that can mean no daycare, which means no work and no paycheck. It can mean the difference between parents trying to stretch supplies by leaving diapers on their babies too long or reusing diapers, leading to painful diaper rash and discomfort.

This community-wide effort allows a wide range of people to organize, participate, and make a real difference; whether you host a drive through a Girl Scout troop, school, book club, or company, it allows people to come together and help their neighbors in a big way.

“Our annual Diaper Drive is helping to eliminate barriers for parents who need access to diapers and wipes. Our process is simple: We collect diapers and wipes, deliver them to nonprofits in need, and they fill their shelves to support families in their care. There are no forms, no applications, no hoops to jump through for access,” said Kristyn Burr, HomeAid National Capital Region CEO. “And that accessibility – particularly since diapers cannot be purchased using Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) or Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) funds – can be truly life-changing.”

HomeAid and their community partners are on track to collect and donate 250,000 diapers and wipes to area nonprofits serving families in need. If you would like to host a drive and need a collection box, flyer, or more information, please get in touch with Tammy Glasser at 703.953.3529 or tglasser@homeaidncr.org

Participating companies and individuals can schedule a time to drop off donations in the Chantilly, VA, area or purchase diapers online. All donations collected will be distributed to HomeAid National Capital region’s nonprofit partners, focusing on alleviating poverty and ending homelessness.
