Building Hope Newsletter, March

CEO Corner

Through strategic partnerships, dedicated volunteers, and generous donors, HomeAid continues to change lives and strengthen communities. Our annual Impact Report details the transformative work we accomplished last year, and I hope you’ll take a moment to flip through it and take a closer look. It outlines our completed construction projects and community engagement initiatives, highlights our donors, and celebrates the people who make it all happen.

The numbers in the report tell a powerful story, but these achievements are more than just statistics—they represent real people finding stability, families building brighter futures, and HomeAid’s partners coming together to uplift entire communities.

As always, HomeAid strives to be a responsible steward of our donors’ contributions. We recognize the many wonderful nonprofits in our region doing great work, so when you choose to give your time and money to HomeAid, we want to assure you that we strategically allocate funds to life-changing programs and services. That’s why we proudly share our financials and provide a transparent overview of how our funds are used.

The programs and initiatives highlighted in the report are made possible through collaboration and a shared commitment to providing shelter and support for those in need. None of this would be possible without the unwavering support of our donors, volunteers, and partners. As we move forward into 2025, we invite you to join us in making an even greater impact. Whether through volunteering, donating, or spreading the word, your involvement matters.

With gratitude,

Making Progress at Reevesland

Last fall, HomeAid and Builder Captain Toll Brothers – in partnership with Habitat DC-NOVA and Arlington County – broke ground on the redevelopment of the historic Reevesland Farmhouse. With a goal of accommodating adults with intellectual disabilities and their caregivers, a new, historically compatible wing will be added to accommodate up to six clients (Core Members) and two caregivers. The existing farmhouse will also be restored and renovated to meet the needs of the Core Members of L’Arche of Greater Washington, which serves people with and without intellectual disabilities.

The project, due to its historic nature and tie-in of so many new elements, has been a multi-phase effort. Remediation of the exterior included soil testing and lead abatement in areas surrounding the foundation, as well as salvaging as much of the original wood siding façade as possible. Indoors, much of the original trim, doors, and hearth pieces were carefully removed for restoration, while everything else was brought down to bare studs so the structural components could be closely examined. A large portion of the lower-level flooring is also being removed to allow for further archaeological studies within the footprint of the home and assessment of sub floor supports.

Arlington County storm water management practices, require the team to monitor for erosion and sediment discharge during weather events. A third-party inspection group has been brought on to proactively ensure all necessary measures are being put into place, as well. Lastly, an archaeological review is underway, as a team explores the site via historical record research, metal detection, and several specific dig points to determine if there are any parts of Arlington’s past yet to be discovered.

HomeAid’s Builder Captain, Toll Brothers and their trade partners will soon begin to reinforce areas of the existing stone foundation, stabilize the existing structure’s frame, pour new concrete slabs for the addition and tie-ins, and replace the roof and its structure.

Thank you, Toll Brothers and our trade partners for taking on this complex project – our work will make an enormous difference for the Core Members of L’Arche who will soon call this home.

Making It Count
Support for GolfAid Fuels Projects

Our GolfAid fundraiser at TopGolf Loudoun was another enormous success, with more than 215 golfers, networkers, and supporters turning out to support HomeAid. More than $55,000 was raised, with 100 percent of the funds raised supporting our mission of helping people experiencing or at risk of experiencing homelessness build new lives through construction, community engagement, and education.

HomeAid National Capital Region’s CEO Kristyn Burr, in thanking supporters for coming out for the event, added, “We are deeply grateful to everyone in attendance who make these renovations possible. Whether you work directly on-site or attend fundraising events like GolfAid, your support fuels our ability to complete projects for our nonprofit partners.

“At Good Shepherd, a recently completed project,” she continued, “your support meant a safe haven for two mothers fleeing domestic violence, who moved in with their small children. Domestic violence is not just physical or emotional—it has a profound financial impact. Both women were not allowed to work while married, leaving them without savings, employable skills, or a support network. Thanks to Good Shepherd, they are now working towards full-time employment and are each in therapy, navigating their divorces, and striving for financial independence. Their journeys will take time, but they now have a safe place to heal, thanks to the critical work of HomeAid and our partners.”

Did you miss out on GolfAid but would still love to donate? It’s never too late!

For those who attended, catch the action on our Flickr page, where photos from GolfAid are now posted, thanks to the generosity of Bob Narod Photography!

Making Tangible Impacts through the Beautiful Outdoors

Stadler Nurseries, a fourth-generation family-run landscaping company, has been one of HomeAid’s longtime partners, working on 15 projects for us since 2009. Their efforts have brought curb appeal, instilled a sense of dignity, and provided lovely outdoor spaces for the clients our nonprofit partners serve. We always know that a Stadler-landscaped project will be a beautiful one! We recently sat down with David Stadler, president and CEO, to find out what their 16-year partnership has meant to the company and its staff.

David Stadler, President, Chad Buchen, Landscape Department Manager, Colin Gillespie, Landscape Manager, Jose Morales, Operations Manager, Antonio DelCid, Production Manager

Q: What has inspired you to say, “Yes!” to HomeAid?

A: Stadler Nurseries has had a long relationship with Stanley Martin Homes (SMH); my father, Peter Stadler, worked with Martin Alloy, founder of SMH, on one of his very first communities. Steve Alloy, the current SMH president and CEO,  offered us the opportunity to continue to work with SMH, providing landscaping services in their communities throughout the Mid-Atlantic region. Steve, in turn, is a founder of HomeAid and has tremendous vision. When he developed this opportunity to utilize his building expertise and partnerships in the building trade to provide safe and dignified housing for those experiencing or at risk of experiencing homelessness, we were right there to help however we could.

Q: If another trade partner was considering getting involved with and supporting HomeAid, what would you tell them?

A: I would emphasize the responsibility we all have in the building industry to find ways to give back. HomeAid provides a great opportunity to work with our fellow trade partners and make something real and lasting – something tangible that will assist those in need through programs and housing.

Our team looks forward to working on HomeAid projects; they’ve become a part of our culture. We are now soundly in the fourth generation of management, and I am proud that volunteerism and philanthropy are core values of our newest group of leaders. Thanks, HomeAid, for the opportunity to be of continued service to you!

Q. What do you love most about your career and working on HomeAid projects?

A: Plants are crucial for the well-being of the planet on a large scale, and they’re important for improving mental well-being by reducing stress and enhancing mood when people interact with them. They are very important to our quality of life. While we don’t supply faucets, light switches, or carpeting, we do supply living elements to HomeAid projects. Our products provide new residents with an opportunity to nurture, to be outdoors, and to be greeted with beauty, color, and scent as they return to their homes.

It is a pleasure working with different trades year after year for many different builders, and it’s nice to have the chance to work with them on meaningful HomeAid projects as well, while building homes and programs for those in need.
