Building Hope Newsletter, March

Executive Director & CEO Corner

As you’ll see later in this issue, my term on the HomeAid America (HAA) Board of Directors kicked off at the National Association of Home Builders’ International Builders’ Show (IBS) in Las Vegas last month, and it was an honor representing our regional affiliate on such a big stage.

In addition to meeting several other National Board members I hadn’t had the opportunity to meet before, I also connected – and reconnected – with other affiliate executive directors. I’m a huge believer that having those ties and relationships makes us stronger and our HomeAid affiliates more effective as we learn and grow from each other while sharing best practices and experiences that help us all achieve more. At the IBS trade show, I had the pleasure of getting together with many of our trade partners and vendors who support us locally and, even more importantly, got to know their teams and colleagues.

At the HomeAid booth, countless industry leaders, builders, remodelers, architects, and professionals from around the world learned more about HomeAid’s work – along with other ways to get involved with our programs and initiatives in our effort to address homelessness nationwide.

This experience was such an important way to lay the groundwork for the future – and an important touchpoint for furthering our relationship with so many of our supporters and partners. I’m grateful to have had the opportunity to represent HomeAid National Capital Region and I look forward to continuing the conversations and working together to help end homelessness for individuals and families.

With gratitude,

2023 Impact Report Available Now

HomeAid National Capital Region’s 2023 Impact Report is now available online, and if you want a full picture of how HomeAid transforms funds and time into major impact on our communities and people, it’s an issue you won’t want to miss. The report details the six building and renovation projects we completed, highlights our nonprofit partnerships and community outreach, and celebrates the people and efforts behind the fundraisers. All of it, in turn, changes the lives of the people we serve. Did you know, for example, that:

Thank You, Golfers & Networkers!

With more than 175 golfers, networkers, and supporters turning out to support HomeAid at our GolfAid fundraiser last week, we all enjoyed another great night of networking and fundraising at TopGolf Loudoun! Together, we raised more than $46,000, with 100 percent of the funds raised supporting our mission of helping people experiencing or at risk of experiencing homelessness build new lives through construction, community engagement, and education.

Did you miss out on GolfAid but would still love to donate? It’s never too late!

For those who attended, catch the action on our Flickr page, where photos from GolfAid are now posted, thanks to the generosity of Bob Narod Photography!

Making It Count

Representing HomeAid on a World Stage

With our very own CEO Kristyn Burr now serving on the HomeAid America (HAA) Board of Directors, her term got off to a lively start last month at the National Association of Home Builders’ International Builders’ Show (IBS) in Las Vegas. IBS was the perfect opportunity to meet with other HomeAid affiliates on new initiatives while attending and meeting new partners at the largest annual light construction show in the world. The show, which attracts upwards of 76,000 visitors from more than 100 countries, plays center stage to connecting, educating, and improving the residential construction industry, and HomeAid America was well represented with its own booth on the trade show floor.

“Our presence there gave us an incredible platform for expanding awareness and making connections with thought leaders and top builders and trades from around the world,” Kristyn said. “So many of our partners were in attendance,” she added, “and IBS provided the perfect environment for expanding our own networks and helping share HomeAid’s story with potential new supporters.”

Thank you, Kristyn and HomeAid America, for representing us so well!

Giving Hope by Giving Back

In last month’s edition of Building Hope, we highlighted a custom-built Project Playhouse built on the grounds of a therapeutic horse-riding facility, and this month, we’d like to introduce you to Green Village Concrete, Inc., which poured the foundation slab and extended an ADA-accessible sidewalk for the project. Green Village also worked on our 2023 Mobile Hope project and has sponsored our Gala and Builders & Friends BBQ to support our mission. The company president, Feliciano Carvalhais, is a treasured partner – learn more about why he says, “Yes!” to HomeAid!

Feliciano Carvalhais

Q: What inspires Green Village to support our mission?

A: I’m a firm believer in giving back. I saw this as a child, seeing my parents helping others and, later in life, seeing my mentors doing the same. It’s not for the accolades and not because it feels good, but because giving back is the right thing to do.

Q: What does your company and staff enjoy most about our events?

A: Boots or suits? These events give us all an opportunity to engage with others within the building industry who we normally wouldn’t. Each is an opportunity to introduce our newer and younger associates to yet another facet of the business. And who doesn’t love BBQ?

Q: What would you tell other trade partners about what it’s like to work with HomeAid?

A: Quite simply, do it. And in my mind, why wouldn’t you? Every project we’ve participated in over the years are for our own communities and neighbors. The old adage of ‘charity begins at home’ still holds true.

Q; What do you love most about your career?

A: The people and relationships built over the 40 years I’ve been in the industry. At the end of the day, this business is still people-based. While the days of handshake deals have gone away, working with people, establishing and forging relationships, and working as a team are some of the things that keeps this industry moving, growing, and improving.
