We’ve worked with more than 60 unique local nonprofits on construction projects in 14 jurisdictions in the D.C. metropolitan area. It’s a lot of ground to cover, but we know when we go into these communities to do a construction project, it brings people together in a really unique way and positively impacts the day to day lives of thousands of people each year. HomeAid and our partners go beyond providing handyman services or doing small building projects instead, we provide expertise and resources to build and renovate spaces that collectively provide dignity and safety to our partners’ clients while increasing capacity and efficiencies for the nonprofits.
We’re purposeful in our efforts, vetting every application to ensure that we’re investing in nonprofits with programs that will be sustainable for years to come. Not only are we focused on working in several different communities throughout the area we also extend beyond providing additional bed space for nonprofits, we work with nonprofits who provide various services to those experiencing or at risk of experiencing homelessness.
In the last several years, we have taken on projects ranging from affordable housing to day centers, emergency shelters, after-school programming space, food pantries, literacy centers, and thrift stores. This strategy ultimately allows us to meet the needs of more people and truly fill gaps in services throughout our region. As we continue to look at new nonprofits’ leadership, sustainability, and impact for new projects, we look forward to continuing to invest in programs that will make a difference in people’s lives for the next decade and beyond. Thank you for joining us!

With gratitude,

HomeAid’s Builders for Babies Diaper Drive is now in its final week, and we’re getting close to our goal of collecting 250,000 diapers by Father’s Day! Every single contribution, whether it’s one box or an entire pallet, can be the difference for thousands of families struggling to provide diapers for their babies. Can you help us meet our goal?
Your donation online takes just a moment, and it really matters: Did you know that diapers and wipes cannot be purchased using Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) or Women, Infants, and Children (WIC)? Or, that most daycares require that parents provide diapers, so if they don’t have enough diapers, that means no daycare, no work, and no paycheck. And, newborns use up to 12 diapers per day – at a cost of over $100 per month per baby!
Make a difference for our community’s tiniest and most vulnerable members. Grab a pack or a pallet of diapers online today!

HomeAid’s 2024 Builders & Friends BBQ is right around the corner – have you registered yet? This is one of our favorite ways to celebrate our collaborative work throughout the region, so please join us on Thursday, June 20, 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the National Botanic Garden in South Riding! In addition to announcing the Trade Partner of the Year – presented to a vendor, trade partner or industry partner who has gone above and beyond in their service to HomeAid – we’ll also offer:
For any Builder Captain or Trade Partner who volunteered on a HomeAid project between June 2023 and June 2024, you are also eligible for TWO FREE tickets to the event; please contact Tammy Glasser for reservation details.
Thank you to our Pit Boss Presenting Sponsor, Buhl Electric Co. Inc.

For many nonprofit housing providers, finding funds to ready a vacated property for another family often means long delays in delivering services to those who need it most. In response, HomeAid launched its Turnover Program in 2018 to help nonprofits quickly prepare housing units so that they could get individuals and families safely moved in with minimal delay. The program, which is fully funded by HomeAid focuses on painting and on replacing carpet or other old flooring with durable and easy-to-clean luxury vinyl planking (LVP), ensures long-term savings for HomeAid partners and dignified, healthy spaces for the clients they serve.
We’ve since completed 23 turnover projects with 12 trade partners, with a retail value of $101,437.50 at 100 percent savings for seven different nonprofits. (A hat tip to Darvish Interiors, which has participated in 17 of our 23 turnover projects!) More than 167 people have been served, and the process start-to-finish can take just a few weeks.
Nonprofits: Do you have a housing unit that needs both new flooring and new paint before your next client moves in and calls it home? Complete the application here and return to HomeAid CEO Kristyn Burr at kburr@homeaidncr.org or call 571.283.6320 with questions.

We’ve long said that our supporters and volunteers come from all backgrounds and with a huge range of skillsets. After meeting Peter Lee, vice president at M&T Bank, we’re reminded again the truth of these words as he’s shown us again and again the power and impact one person can have on our organization. Peter has jumped into volunteering with our Builders for Babies Diaper Drive for two years, helping recruit donors, delivering diapers, getting his team and clients involved, and enthusiastically supporting our community’s littlest citizens in need. Find out more about what inspired Peter to play such an important role in this annual effort!

Q: Why did you decide to help support HomeAid’s mission?
A: I fell in love with HomeAid, its mission, and how HomeAid works to support those experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness. I used to be a contractor, so renovations and building were a natural draw. I enjoyed hearing about HomeAid’s construction program and collection drives like the diaper drive. M&T Bank is more involved in the community than any other bank I’ve worked for in my 26-year career, and I love that M&T gives me the opportunity to be involved with HomeAid’s impactful work.
Q: Why did you decide to focus your efforts on Builders for Babies?
A: Volunteering is part of my DNA both personally and professionally. Our family regularly volunteers, and I’m a Board Member of an organization for foster children too. It’s just such an easy answer when it comes to babies and kids – they need us. As a banker, I have access to so many clients, and I don’t think I’ve ever had anyone tell me ‘no’ to purchasing diapers for babies in need. Once we are done collecting diapers, my whole team will help sort and deliver to the nonprofits. I really like that the diaper drives provide an opportunity for others at my bank to pitch in and help. At M&T, we’re involved with 77 nonprofits, have donated $1.4 million, awarded $800,000 in grants and $200,000 in sponsorships, and donated 9,000 volunteer hours – all just in Greater Washington.
Q: If others were considering getting involved with HomeAid, what would you tell them?
A: They’re phenomenal. Everyone on staff, on the Board, and the other supporters are all great to work with. You can see their passion and commitment in their eyes, and it feels great to be surrounded by so many others who are focused on helping out in the community. This is a feel-good organization through and through.

Shop and Support
For the entire month of July, each time a reusable $2.75 Community Bag is purchased at the Giant Food store located at 13330 Franklin Farm Road in Herndon, $1 will be donated to HomeAid National Capital Region! This is a great way to raise awareness, support the environment, and fundraise for our cause. Please help us spread the word by letting everyone you know in the Herndon area that now is the time to purchase reusable Community Bags.

Thank You, Care Day Volunteers
A big round of applause for the 47 volunteers from NVBIA’s Future Leaders, who partnered with HomeAid on a Care Day service project to provide yard work at affordable housing sites for Cornerstones in the Reston/Herndon area on May 23, with much of their landscaping improvements paid for through donations and all of their labor, of course, donated! A second Care Day project was also completed on June 7, with 10 volunteers from Peterson Companies volunteering their time to paint three administrative offices at ALIVE!, on nonprofit in Alexandria that works to combat insecurity.
Got Gift Cards?
Do you have unused gift cards sitting in a drawer at home or stuffed in your wallet? (It’s a common problem, according to a new report from Credit Summit, an online provider of financial advisory services: Almost two-thirds of American consumers have at least one unspent gift card tucked away, and at least half of those consumers lose a gift card before they use it. It adds up to as much as $21 billion of unspent money!) Don’t let your gift cards be part of that statistic: Please consider donating them to HomeAid’s Annual Auction, where they’ll help raise critically needed funds to support our mission. Contact Tammy Glasser at tglasser@homeaidncr.org if you have any gift cards you’d like to donate. Thank you!
