Building Hope Newsletter, January

CEO Corner

In 2026, HomeAid proudly celebrates 25 years of service in our community. For a quarter century, we have worked alongside dedicated builders, nonprofit partners, volunteers, and supporters to create safe, dignified spaces for individuals and families experiencing or at risk of homelessness. What began as a vision to leverage the building industry for good has grown into a powerful movement of compassion, collaboration, and lasting impact.

Our milestone anniversary honors the countless lives impacted, the partnerships that made it possible, and a shared belief that everyone deserves a safe place to call home.

Over the last few months, thanks to a grant from Virginia Housing, our Board of Directors and staff have been working together to develop a strategic plan that will guide HomeAid through the next three years. The plan provides clarity, focus, and accountability helping to ensure that our mission-driven work continues to be meaningful and sustainable. It serves as a roadmap to inspire staff, volunteers, board members, and partners to ensure everyone is working together towards common goals and measurable outcomes.

Key outcomes of this strategic plan include intensifying HomeAid’s footprint in priority markets such as Washington, D.C. and Richmond, Virginia, allowing us to reach more individuals and families in need through strengthened nonprofit partnerships and increased project capacity. We will also focus on deepening relationships with industry leaders while broadening and diversifying our constituent base to ensure long-term engagement and support.

Equally important is ensuring the sustainability and continued growth of our programs. This includes investing in our volunteer network, creating meaningful opportunities for engagement, and strengthening internal systems, including our database, to improve stewardship, cultivation, and data-driven decision-making.

As we step into the year ahead, our momentum is stronger than ever. Your support fuels our mission and inspires all that we do, and we look forward to sharing the milestones, stories, and impact we will achieve together in the months to come. Thank you for starting 2026 with us and we look forward to celebrating our 25th anniversary year alongside you.

With gratitude,

Get Ready for GolfAid on March 5!

Whether you’re ready to golf, network, team-build, volunteer, or do all four, you’ll find what you’re looking for at our upcoming GolfAid event on March 5, 3:30-6:30 p.m. at TopGolf Loudoun in Ashburn. In addition, your support will help HomeAid transform spaces and provide nonprofits with the essential resources they need to better assist our neighbors, grow their critical programs, and have a lasting impact on the people they serve.

“The benefits of GolfAid are far-reaching,” HomeAid National Capital Region CEO Kristyn Burr said. “In addition to being a really fun afternoon, we’re proud of the opportunity for everyone to really mix and mingle with top industry leaders and have the opportunity to really expand your network in an informal atmosphere while supporting a great cause. This is a great event for everyone who works in the homebuilding and associated industries!”

Don’t golf? This event is still for you! To ensure that we offer what suits you best, we’re offering a registration for golfers, which offers full access to everything the event has to offer including three hours of unlimited golf, and one for networkers, which offers access to great food, drinks, and networking (no golf).

Registration is now open! Interested in volunteering at the event? We’re always looking for help with registration and check-in, raffle, merchandise, and setup/breakdown. Find out more!

All funds raised will directly support upcoming projects and programs. Help us give new hope to those experiencing or at risk of experiencing homelessness, including kids, single moms, veterans, intellectually disabled adults, and countless others who are coming out of crisis and need a hand up.

In Your Community

John Darvish, 2026 HomeAid National Capital Region President

John Darvish, president of John Darvish Construction, will be the 2026 president of the HomeAid National Capital Region Board of Directors. John and his company have worked tirelessly on behalf of HomeAid National Capital Region since 2008, consistently contributing to several construction projects every year and donating thousands of dollars in materials, time, and expertise to help organizations in our community. He is also extremely generous in sponsoring our events throughout the year.

“I arrived in this country in my early 20s, with only $26 in my pocket, and I was looking for the same freedoms and opportunities that so many others do today. Although I was never homeless, there were nights when I asked the ‘what ifs …’,” Darvish said. “So being in the position now to help other people get through one more day, one more week, one more month … and achieve their goal of stability means that my own life’s goal is being achieved. I’m honored to serve in 2026 and help lead and guide this organization alongside a community of givers.”

Following the Board election in January, it is expected that Darvish will be joined on the Executive Board by Worth Jenkins (DRB Homes), vice president/president-elect; Alicia Skoug (Drees Homes), secretary; Rick Cole (The Long Companies), treasurer; Bryant Cruzado (Toll Brothers), at-large member; and Bryan Guidash (Walsh, Colucci, Lubeley & Walsh, P.C.), immediate past president.

We would like to thank Bryan Guidash for his dedicated service as HomeAid’s 2025 Board president. Bryan’s leadership, vision, and unwavering commitment have played a vital role in advancing our mission and strengthening our impact. We are deeply grateful for the time, energy, and expertise Bryan has shared with us, in this leadership role over the last year.

Curt Anderson and Chip Helme will be rotating off the Board in January, and we want to thank them for their years of service and expertise!

Making It Count

Turning Houses into Homes

Thanks to the 11 individuals and companies that collected and donated to our Home Essentials Drive, we collected $2,845 worth of items for families and individuals moving out of homelessness and into housing that HomeAid and our partners have renovated. Thanks to everyone who donated, we will now have plenty of kitchen items, bedding, and cleaning supplies to distribute to our our nonprofit partners and their clients to make their new spaces feel like home! Equally importantly, we are able to save our nonprofit partners critical funds that they can now focus on other client services.

In addition to outfitting the properties we renovate, we provided 17 kits of household items to three different nonprofit partners, FAITH, St. John’s Community Services, the Lamb Center, supporting their missions to help individuals and families transition into stable housing. Valued at $400 each, these kits provide critical support to individuals and families, helping them focus on rebuilding their lives.

Thanks to HomeAid’s Home Essentials program, we are able to help furnish spaces with small appliances, bedding, and other essential home items that help restore a sense of stability, comfort, and self-worth. Purchasing even basic necessities can be an overwhelming expense, and HomeAid supporters play a vital role in lightening that burden and helping transform a house into a home.

Thank you Stanley Martin Homes, K. Hovnanian Homes, Groupe, Richmond American Homes, Tom Hyde, Amanda Berg, Phillip and Karen Lawless, Theresa Haffer and the other anonymous donors for your generous support.

A Partnership Built to Last: Atlantic Building Supply & HomeAid

Atlantic Building Supply, a Manassas, VA,-based provider of general building materials and supplies, has been one of our most consistent and longtime partners, with 14 completed projects dating back to 2010. Case Van Wingerden, general manager, has been part of our successful partnership since 2010, and we sat down with him to talk about their experience working with HomeAid and why they’ve found our partnership so desirable.

Case Van Wingerden, Atlantic building Supply

Q: What have you found most personally inspirational about HomeAid?

A: HomeAid helps create safe, stable homes for individuals and families in need. As someone with a family of my own, I understand how essential it is to live in a secure and comforting environment, one that allows us to face life’s daily challenges with dignity and peace of mind. Knowing that HomeAid provides that sense of safety and stability truly resonates with me. HomeAid supports its nonprofit partners by renovating and reimagining older properties, upgrading spaces, adjusting layouts when needed, and transforming them into homes that better serve individuals and families as they rebuild their lives.

Q: What have you learned about homelessness and the nonprofits that help support families and individuals in our region?

A: I’ve learned how impactful HomeAid and partners’ work is: It is life-changing to give people in transition the gift of private, safe homes, where they can get back on their feet and start providing for themselves again after recovering from trauma, abuse, or just unexpected circumstances that affected their wellbeing and ability to provide for themselves. Working in this industry, I have been exposed to similar situations with current and past employees who sometimes just need to be picked up and set back on their feet for a second chance to excel in life.

Q: What would you tell another prospective trade partner about your experience working with HomeAid? What has been one of your more memorable projects with us?

A: Help out any way you can! There are some projects where we provide minimal support and others where we can contribute more. One of our more memorable projects was the Alive! House in Alexandria, VA, where HomeAid worked with Richmond American Homes to transform a three-story home into three separate units for mothers and children who had been exposed to trauma in their homes or other emergency situations. We were able to provide new door hardware for each unit to allow for private and safe access for these families. We also contributed bathroom accessories and mirrors to make the living space more comfortable for families with young children. It’s always a feel-good experience!

Long-lasting Impact with HomeAid
Every year at our annual Gala & Auctions, we screen a video spotlighting special moments in our efforts to reduce homelessness and support individuals and families experiencing or at risk of experiencing homelessness. This year, we selected three projects that we’ve completed in the last five years to show where they are today and help our supporters better understand how our work makes long-lasting change for our nonprofit partners and the clients they serve. Check out the video and the impact we have made!
