HomeAid National Capital Region is committed to providing the most impact for our nonprofit partners in 2024, but let’s talk about what that impact looks like moving into the new year.
We have four construction projects in development located throughout the region in Manassas, Fairfax County, Arlington, and Alexandria, VA. The projects range from expanding a food pantry, laying the groundwork for ten affordable housing units to be built, restoring a vacant historical home for adults with intellectual disabilities, and renovating a home for veterans. These projects will have an extremely powerful outcome for the nonprofits and those they serve. Making spaces more efficient and safe, and providing more beds for people who wouldn’t have a place to go otherwise. Plus, we have six projects pending review!
We also received positive feedback from our nonprofit partners regarding our Builders for Babies and Home Essentials Drives, which has been incredible. Those two programs alone are filling gaps in our community in a big way. Together, we are meeting the needs of families and individuals at a critical point in their lives. We are providing household items as people move into permanent housing, helping to make their new space a home as well as ensuring the smallest family members are clean and safe.
And although nothing has changed in that we will continue to create meaningful and thoughtful transformations that propel the work of our nonprofit partners, we have a few of our own resolutions, much like many of you. Our team will focus on cultivating relationships with nonprofits who will benefit from our Turnover Program, which is designed to help organizations quickly prepare affordable housing units that need new flooring and fresh paint before new families can move in. We will also work closely with builders interested in our Project Playhouse Program to create a unique opportunity for builders to partner with HomeAid to construct and donate custom-built playhouses for our nonprofit partners serving young kids.
You play a critical role in addressing the unique needs of our nonprofit partners. When they have the spaces and resources that are essential, they can better meet our neighbors’ needs, grow their critical programs, and have a lasting impact on the people they serve.
We can’t wait to get started with you at our side. Happy New Year!

With gratitude,

Tom Twomey, Division President, Northern Virginia, Stanley Martin Homes, has been named 2024 president of the HomeAid National Capital Region Board of Directors. Twomey, a member of the board since 2021, has been an instrumental figure in Stanley Martin’s collaboration with HomeAid, recognizing the profound impact the organization makes in the communities where Stanley Martin operates. “I am eager and honored to serve in this leadership role for an organization I respect so much,” he said.
In his capacity as President, Twomey aims to build on the successful initiatives of his predecessors, focusing on expanding HomeAid’s programs, community outreach efforts, and advocacy for individuals experiencing homelessness. “I am committed to advancing HomeAid’s mission and furthering our impact in addressing homelessness.”
Twomey will be joined on the Executive Board by Bryan Guidash (Walsh, Colucci, Lubeley & Walsh, P.C.), vice president/president-elect; John Darvish (John Darvish Construction), secretary; Rick Cole (The Long Companies), treasurer; and Lauren Kinard (First Excel Title), immediate past president.
Many thanks to outgoing Board members Greg Carter (Bank of America), David Gill (Wire Gill LLP), Deepak “Dee” Kakar (M&T Bank), and Soledad Portilla (STACK Infrastructure) for your service and contributions.

Mark your calendars and register today for GolfAid, to be held at TopGolf Loudoun on Thursday, March 7, 2024, from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m.! You’ll have the opportunity to network with the region’s top builders and trade partners; cut loose with colleagues through some fun teambuilding in an informal environment, enjoy plenty of food and beverage; and, of course, try your hand at golf in one of TopGolf’s 34 climate-controlled bays.
We’re again offering two types of registrations – one for golfers, which offers full access to everything the event has to offer including three hours of unlimited golf, and one for networkers, which includes great food, drinks, and networking (no golf). Register today!
All funds raised will directly support upcoming construction projects, three of which will be multi-million-dollar investments in our community. Help us give new hope to those at risk of homelessness or experiencing homelessness, including youth, single moms, veterans, intellectually disabled adults, and countless others who are coming out of crisis and need a hand up.

Huge gratitude to Stanley Martin Homes, First Excel Title, Sun Design, Northern Virginia’s Building Industry Association Women in the Building Industry (WBI) and Future Leaders, and K. Hovnanian Homes for your company-wide collection drives of more than 800 household essentials, valued at more than $4,000! Things like new bedding, small kitchen appliances, and bathroom items are essential when moving, and they’re especially meaningful when you’re moving out of shelter and into a new home.
Your generosity will bring much needed necessities to our nonprofit partners’ clients and enable them to dedicate even more funding to programs and services rather than on supplies. Thank you!
Did you miss the Home Essentials Drive but still want to contribute? We have many volunteer opportunities throughout the year – please join us!

Eastern Applicators has contributed to many of HomeAid’s projects over the years, this year working on two – Mobile Hope and Thrive – and investing more than $35,000 in the communities that each nonprofit serves. We sat down with President Rob D’Lugos to learn more about what drives him – and the company – to support HomeAid through the drywall and painting company that was founded in 1987.

Q: What inspires you to say ‘yes!’ to working with HomeAid?
A: We recognize how fortunate we are to work in such an affluent area of the country; our business has benefited greatly from the robust economy that exists around D.C. That said, we know there are many in our community requiring additional help and resources to prosper. HomeAid provides a great opportunity to reinvest in our community benefiting those in the greatest need.
Q: What do you enjoy most about working with Builder Captains and other trade partners on HomeAid projects?
A: Our typical work environment can be very stressful, as our days are driven by deadlines, budgets, and schedules that can test even the strongest of working relationships. When working with HomeAid, we’re guided by the common goal of helping others. These projects allow all team members to refocus and collaborate on a very worthy cause.
Q: What would you tell other trades about the experience?
A: Helping those less fortunate in our community strengthens our cores as human beings and can’t be measured in dollars. The results of our efforts with HomeAid always make me proud.

Opening Doors for People in Need
If you weren’t able to attend our Gala & Auction in November, you may have missed this highlight video of one of our 2023 projects for FACETS, which focuses on our $114,375 construction project completed by Lennar. The project made an eight-bedroom group home for men coming out of chronic homelessness more welcoming, with updates to the 5,000 square-foot space, including updates to the common area and kitchen, including brand new easy-to-use appliances. You’ll see before, during, and after footage, and we hope it will help paint the picture of why we do what we do.

First Project Completed in DC
Another video shown at our 2023 Gala & Auction, featuring Thrive DC located in Northwest DC, highlights the $155,000 project completed for St. Stephen and the Incarnation Church. The building houses “Loaves and Fishes” – which serves hot meals on weekends and Federal holidays and hosts a weekend food pantry – and Thrive DC, a nonprofit organization committed to preventing and ending homelessness by providing a safety net for people experiencing housing instability, food insecurity, and economic crisis. In this heartwarming video, you’ll hear directly from clients living and being served in this beautiful building, which now features a completely renovated dining room and kitchen, restrooms, hallways, laundry room, food pantry and stairwells, and storage facilities.
