Building Hope Newsletter, August

CEO Corner

You may have noticed we’ve been talking a lot about HomeAid Care Days this year, and it’s for good reason: Since January, we’ve coordinated nine of these hands-on volunteer service days, during which volunteers come together to give back to our local nonprofit partners. Typically, volunteers are tasked with jobs like cleaning up outdoor spaces and landscaping, sorting food and clothing donations, organizing pantries and thrift stores, and cleaning – all at no cost to the nonprofit, allowing them to use those vital savings elsewhere.

Our ability to ease the burden of these tasks for our partners and take care of work that probably wouldn’t happen otherwise is a shining example of how we continue to meet our nonprofits and their clients where they are and fill gaps as needed. Our Construction Program and Turnover Projects will always be a core part of our mission, but we will always make space to pitch in to provide much-needed help for nonprofits we know are always being asked to do more work with less resources.

Care Days also provide a critically important path for people who want to give back and get involved but who may not have the expertise or licenses to work on our construction sites. This year alone, 169 individuals have grabbed hold of the opportunity to volunteer with a Care Day, representing nine companies and serving 11 nonprofits. Add up the number of hours each of those volunteers served, and the value of their time tops $17,621 in sweat equity.

Let that sink in – $17,621 for nonprofits with underfunded programs that need help. $17,162 to benefit people as wide-ranging as babies, young kids, single moms, domestic violence survivors, an individual looking for clothing for a job interview, or a family struggling with food insecurity. We’ve had Care Day teams as small as five volunteers and as large as 30. We’ve put everyone on the same job and have split large groups across multiple properties. Most Care Days are half-day efforts, and many volunteers gather afterwards to toast a job well done. It’s a great team-building event, with a hefty dose of feel-good giving back. Thank you to all of our Care Day volunteers who have rolled up their sleeves and joined us in a day of service.

With gratitude,

HomeAid to be Beneficiary of Three Golf Tournaments

This fall, HomeAid is honored to be named the beneficiary of three other golf tournaments organized by valued partners – K Hovnanian Homes, Pulte Homes, and Toll Brothers. These third-party events are enormously important for us – not only for the critically needed funding, but also because of what they represent: the companies’ belief in our work and their interest in helping elevate our mission to a broader audience.

“The funds raised by third-party events may be the most visible result benefit,” added HomeAid National Capital Region CEO Kristyn Burr. “But equally impactful is that from the perspective of our small staff, these efforts quite literally expand our capacity since other organizations take on the event planning and hosting responsibilities, which we know is a heavy lift. They also help spread awareness and increase education about our mission and local homelessness to an entirely new group of people, many of whom we may not be able to reach if it weren’t for our common connection with the host company. We’re so grateful and humbled by the support that these three companies have shown us year after year, as they’ve worked side-by-side with us on our projects and have selected us as beneficiaries of their own fundraisers.”

Third-party fundraisers play a vital role in supporting our work, and we are deeply incredibly grateful to Pulte Homes, K. Hovnanian Homes and Toll Brothers and their staff who organize all the logistics for hosting tournaments on HomeAid’s behalf.

Making It Count

Mark Your Calendar! HomeAid’s Gala & Auction is November 15

On Saturday, November 15, at 6:30 p.m., HomeAid National Capital Region will host our biggest fundraiser of the year, the 2025 Secret Garden-themed Gala & Auction. Can we count on you to mark your calendar and save the date?

The evening is always full of feel-good moments, as we screen a mini documentary that illustrates our impact and ability to change lives; raise our paddles to fund another year of providing safe and dignified housing and programmatic facilities for those experiencing or at risk of experiencing homelessness; and celebrate our 2025 President’s Circle Award winners. In between, enjoy hors d’oeuvres, an open bar, dinner, and a silent and live auction. Join us and toast another year of success with a signature drink and ham it up in our always-popular photo booth! We’ll gather at the Westfields Marriott Washington Dulles in Chantilly and we hope to see you there!

When Paint Becomes Purpose

We’ve all seen the difference a can of paint can make, and since 2010, Color World Paint & Drywall is the trade partner who has worked its magic on 11 of our renovation projects and two of our turnover projects. Co-owner Bob Partin joined us to talk about what he – and his company – have enjoyed most about working with HomeAid.

Bob Partin, Color World Paint & Drywall

Q: Why has Color World continued to work with HomeAid?

A: I think it’s easy for those of us who have been in this market for a long time to take for granted this idea that we’re going to be successful and have plenty. But as we reach the latter half of our careers and start looking back, we realize that helping the less fortunate is what really matters. Our work with HomeAid has provided that important opportunity, with one project really sticking out for me being a lower level space that we helped refurbish. It was a safe home for domestic violence survivors, and the reminder that there are women who have to pack up their kids, run away, and hide felt extremely terrifying. It really struck a chord and made me realize that as humans, our purpose is to help. That’s our purpose. So if we as a company can help in this small way, we’ll do it.

Q: If another Trade Partner is considered getting involved with and supporting HomeAid, what would you tell them about your experience?

A: It’s seamless. Everything runs smoothly, and HomeAid’s staff is great. They make it easy to get in, get out, and make people happy. It’s that simple.

Q: What is a “typical” HomeAid project for you?

A: We’ve done everything from exterior work, interior paint, residential and commercial. Anything to do with paint and drywall, we’ve done. Our work is so visible, providing the clean and fresh look that paint can so easily do. In the industry, painters and drywallers may just be a name and a number, but for the people HomeAid helps serve, I know our work means a lot to them. On another, similar project, we were doing work on a home where a veteran lived, and he presented beautiful, handcrafted ink pens that he personally made for us. That pen still sits in my office and is my daily reminder that the people we serve know that we care, and that we’re willing to do something for them. That’s a wonderful feeling.

A Care Day with Thompson Greenspon
HomeAid and Thompson Greenspon teamed up in July to complete another successful Care Day for New Hope Housing and House of Mercy.

At House of Mercy, volunteers worked diligently to organize, price, and sort donations for the thrift shop and stock shelves in the food pantry. House of Mercy is a nonprofit in Manassas that provides food and clothing to thousands of households each month.

Meanwhile, another group of volunteers lent a hand at New Hope Housing’s Bailey’s Shelter, a multi-service facility that offers both emergency shelter and permanent supportive housing. Volunteers spent the afternoon landscaping and cleaning up the grounds, helping create a more welcoming environment for residents. HomeAid proudly donated 30 bags of mulch to support this project.

Thank you, Thompson Greenspon, for your time, energy, and continued commitment to serving our community!

A Care Day with Stanley Martin Homes
We’re deeply grateful to the two incredible teams from Stanley Martin Homes IT Department who took part in last month’s Care Day, lending their time and talents to support two outstanding nonprofit partners, Pathway Homes, Inc. and Shelter House Loudoun Homeless Services Center.

At Pathway Homes, volunteers assembled 200 welcome baskets packed with essentials like laundry detergent, paper towels, cleaning supplies, towels, and personal care items helping to provide a fresh start for new residents. It was inspiring to see everyone come together, working in assembly lines with such purpose and care.

Over at the Loudoun Homeless Services Center, the second group rolled up their sleeves for a top-to-bottom deep clean of the shelter. From scrubbing down kitchens and sanitizing countertops to cleaning windows, walls, blinds, and floors. Every inch of the common areas received some extra love and attention.

Thank you Stanley Martin, for your continued dedication to building stronger, more compassionate communities. We’re so grateful for your partnership!
