Building Hope Newsletter, August

CEO Corner

As you’ll read about in this issue of Building Hope, we recently completed a major renovation of a home owned by ALIVE!, enabling this nonprofit partner to provide up to 24 months of transitional housing and support for three women and their families. It’s not the first time we’ve worked with ALIVE!, as we also recently coordinated a Care Day in partnership with John Marshall Bank at the organization’s Van Dorn Food Hub, where volunteers cleaned, stocked shelves, and washed delivery vans. At another Care Day, volunteers from Van Metre built benches and raised planter beds for their Del Ray Food Hub garden. And in June, we delivered diapers and wipes to them as part of our Builders for Babies initiative. In short, our work with ALIVE! is a shining example of our strategic approach to our mission of helping people experiencing or at risk of experiencing homelessness build new lives; not only are we building and renovating for our nonprofit partners– we’re also helping to fill critical gaps to support those who need so much more than just a roof over their head. HomeAid continues to deepen our knowledge and strengthen our resolve to meet the needs of our nonprofit partners throughout the region. We have been pushing boundaries and discovering innovative approaches to make meaningful impact. Every step taken has been with the intention of expanding our reach, ensuring that we are always in tune with the evolving demands of those we serve.

Our partnership with ALIVE! has been so successful because they share our commitment of supporting, uplifting and helping to provide a sturdy foundation for those in need.

“So many people know ALIVE! for our food pantry,” said ALIVE! executive director Jennifer Ayers at our July ribbon-cutting. “But we have also had the shelter since the ‘70s, with the last renovation taking place in 1993. Now, what was an institutional space has been transformed into a dignified and beautiful space that people can call home. Our goal is to move people from a place where they are in risk and hurting to a place that in two years they can leave and hopefully never have to go back to being homeless again,” added Ayers. “Thanks to HomeAid we now have a dignified and homey space, especially for the children who live here.”

Thank you to everyone who participated in the ALIVE! Construction Project, Care Days and Builders for Babies Initiative. Your efforts have enabled HomeAid to provide a wide variety of resources and skills, helping them to carry out their mission.

With gratitude,

HomeAid, Richmond American Homes Complete Renovation for ALIVE!

On July 25, HomeAid celebrated the completion of our most recent construction project for ALIVE! House, at a ribbon cutting with Builder Captain Richmond American Homes and 21 trade partners. The project represents $107,739 in community investment, 97 percent of which was donated by HomeAid, Richmond American, and its partners. The renovation will allow ALIVE!, which provides up to 24 months of temporary housing and support for women and their families in emergency and transitional situations, to provide housing to three Alexandria families.

Top priorities for the 1,200-square foot single-family home included reconfiguring and remodeling the home to accommodate three families in separate residential units, a residential apartment and staff office space, a resident common area, a half bath for staff, and additional storage. Trade partners also installed new flooring, painted the interior, and updated the kitchen and bathrooms.

The project is the latest of many ways HomeAid has supported this longtime nonprofit partner, through Care Days, diaper and wipes deliveries for their pantry, and the construction of planter boxes and benches for their garden.

Thank you, Richmond American Homes and trade partners, for helping ALIVE! provide a safe and dignified home for families in emergency and transition.

Support Spotlight

Interior Logic Group: A Partner, Sponsor & Supporter

Ever since Interior Logic Group first got involved with HomeAid in 2018, they have continued to donate their expertise and materials for several projects – most recently for the ALIVE! project in Alexandria, where their team installed 1,600 square feet of luxury vinyl plank flooring. They’ve sponsored and attended just about every one of our Builders & Friends BBQs and golf events since then too, further supporting our mission through fundraising. We recently sat down with Keith Hodges, account executive, to learn more about the company’s decision to partner with us.

Keith Hodges

Q: Why did you say, “Yes!” to help support our mission?

A: In 2018, one of our builder partners – Richmond American Homes – asked us if we’d be willing to support a HomeAid project they were working on. They gave us the back story of who HomeAid was and the kind of work they did. I personally dug into it to learn more about HomeAid’s mission, and it seemed like a great opportunity. It provided a way to get involved and give back to the community – which feels great – but it also allowed us to directly support families in need. Knowing a family could live in a dignified home while they got the reset they needed during a rough patch is something I’m proud to play a role in.

Q: Interior Logic Group has been an active sponsor and attendee at our BBQs and golf events since 2018. What would you tell someone who was thinking of attending or sponsoring the events?

A: We’re all running businesses, and HomeAid’s events offer incredible networking opportunities. They’re a great way to catch up with other builders and trades for a behind-the-scenes look at the industry and market. Everyone is seeing the market through their own lens and expertise, and having the chance to keep up with so many industry insiders in other trades gives you an undeniable edge. I’m also able to connect with other builders I may not have had the chance to get in front of before. As far as networking events go, HomeAid checks a lot of boxes.

Q: What have you been most surprised to learn about homelessness since your work with HomeAid began?

A: There are a lot of people who are in a bad situation and need support. Whether it’s a teen trying to find their way or a family escaping domestic violence and need a place to go, it’s important to be a part of a network that can help them. I try to give whenever I can, and I encourage our company to do so, too. There’s no specific type of charity that we target – we’re sensitive to a lot of issues, and there’s a lot of pride and ownership at Interior Logic Group for giving back in as many ways as we can.

Announcements

Thank You, Care Day Volunteers
HomeAid and Thompson Greenspon recently teamed up to complete a successful Care Day at Catholic Charities. At the Catholic Charities’ Alexandria Food Pantry, 15 volunteers unloaded, sorted, and stocked food donations; received deliveries and organized food on shelves; and prepared food for distribution. The food pantry is a critical provider of perishable and non-perishable food – including fresh produce, dairy, and meat – and basic items such as cereal, canned vegetables, rice, and beans to clients in need.

Shining the Spotlight on HomeAid
CEO Kristyn Burr was invited last month to address the
International Real Estate Association for Professionals (IREAP) during their
July networking mixer, with HomeAid chosen as the Nonprofit Spotlight. More than 100 members and guests attended the event in Tysons Corner, representing businesses in construction, development, investments (domestic and international), engineering, and other trades in the real estate community. Thank you, Peter Lee of M&T Bank, for this opportunity to share information about HomeAid with so many new supporters!

Sharing HomeAid’s Mission in Winchester
Erica Simpson, our construction program director, attended the Top of Virginia Building Association’s (TVBA) Summer Mixer at the West Oaks Farm Market in Winchester last month. Sponsored by Heritage Site Development and attended by a wide range of building industry professionals, Erica enjoyed the opportunity to help spread awareness of HomeAid’s mission and our work in Winchester.
